1860: The legendary Pony Express begins carrying mail between St. Joseph, Mo., and Sacramento, Calif. (The delivery system lasts only 18 months before giving way to the transcontinental telegraph.)

1936: Bruno Hauptmann is electrocuted in Trenton, N.J., for the kidnap-murder of Charles Lindbergh Jr.

1942: During World War II, Japanese forces begin their final assault on Bataan against American and Filipino troops who surrender six days later; the capitulation is followed by the notorious Bataan Death March.

1968: The day before he is assassinated in Memphis, Tenn., civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. delivers his famous “mountaintop” speech to a rally of striking sanitation workers.

1988: The Trumbull County Board of Revisions will hear more than 400 taxpayers who claim the valuation on their real estate is too high.

A survey of municipal and county court judges shows that some are routinely refusing to levy court costs even though the costs are designed to generate revenue for area municipalities and state social programs.

1973: An old suitcase containing 20 sticks of dynamite with a burned out fuse is found beneath the car of Youngstown Patrolman Nicholas D’Alesio, which was parked in the driveway of his home at 2898 Louise Rita Court.

Harold S. Rickert, retired domestic relations and juvenile court judge, dies in North Side hospital after being taken there complaining of chest pains. The flag at the Mahoning County Courthouse is lowered to half staff.

1963: City Engineer Albert Haenny says Youngstown does not have the $500,000 needed for street repairs and suggests assessing some of the costs to property owners, a move he acknowledges would not be popular.

A record high temperature of 83 brings out sunbathers in Youngstown, but the summer-like weather is not expected to last.

1938: The Home Owners Loan Corp. has 900 houses in Youngstown and vicinity to refurbish and sell. Thirty were sold in the last month at fair prices, but not bargain basement deals so as not to deflate the real estate market.

Judge George Gessner issues an injunction against euthanizing four unlicensed dogs owned by Mrs. Martha Rockwell, 542 Shady Run Road, who didn’t have the $10 for licenses needed to free them from the county dog pound.
