15 and 16-year-olds charged in Canfield High School bomb threat

One week after an 11-year-old girl was charged in a bomb threat at Canfield Middle School, two more female students are charged in the bomb threat that closed Canfield High School on March 7.

The two sophomores, age 15 and 16, face the misdemeanor offenses of making false alarms and obstructing official business, according to Canfield police.

“Initially ... they both lied to investigators,” said Scott Weamer, assistant police chief, who responded the day of the bomb threat. “But we got to a point where we had enough probable cause where we didn’t need a confession from them.”

The middle school threat occurred March 20. Though police received some leads based on the middle school investigation, the two females were identified as authors of a handwritten note that was found in the high school gymnasium on the morning of March 7 as a result of unrelated leads.

Parents of the students have been cooperative, Weamer said, but no reason has been given as to why the girls decided to leave the note.

“My impression is that it started out as a joke, and then one decided to actually act on it,” Weamer said.

The cases, including the middle school case, have been referred to Mahoning County Juvenile Court.

Though neither bomb threat was considered credible by police when the threats were found and the schools were swept for explosives, Weamer said the incidents give parents and students an opportunity to learn.

“They [students] need to know there’s consequences for their actions,” Weamer said. “We’re fortunate nothing happened and nobody was hurt — from the students to the teachers to the law enforcement and fire and EMS personnel — but the potential was there.”

Canfield Superintendent Alex Geordan couldn’t be reached for comment Monday.
