Warren’s native rock son makes food impact Food-raiser for Dave Grohl Alley

The Main Street Warren Group needed some help putting the final touches on its fundraiser for the upkeep of Dave Grohl Alley.

The group wanted a burger on Courthouse Grille’s menu for the Grohl Alley Rock ‘n’ Fest to honor Warren’s native son Dave Grohl, so they asked the burger experts, the MVBRB (Mahoning Valley Burger Review Board), to help make the final decision.

Grohl rose to fame as the drummer for rock band Nirvana, and now fronts the Foo Fighters.

The official Dave Grohl burger, along with a beer brewed specially for the event, will be unveiled at the festival, which will be May 11 in Dave Grohl Alley, downtown. It will be open to the public, and attendees will be able to purchase the winning burger and beer that day.

The burger and beer judging was Saturday at a Main Street group member’s home. Each of the three contending burgers featured Grohl’s favorite topping — bacon. Each burger was made by a member of the Courthouse Grille staff.

The first, by owner Lynne Villers, featured bacon, bourbon, onions, garlic and Parmesan cheese. Stuffed between two patties was colby jack cheese. On top on the burger was bacon, tomato, onion and a bourbon sauce with a special bacon spread.

The second was from chef Baron Lockhart and had a burger with pepperoni and onion. On top of his burger was bacon, provolone and a hot bacon mustard.

The third burger was from baker Katie Badanjek, who added Worcestershire sauce, a secret seasoning and bacon fat to her beef. She topped her burger with mushrooms, A1 Sauce, horseradish mayo, bacon, provolone and french fried onion straws.

We each received a plate with half of each burger. The burgers all looked and smelled great, so it came down to the taste.

Joining the burger guys for this special review was Warren Mayor Doug Franklin.

Mayor Franklin said about all the burgers, “These are delicious.” For the winning burger, he said, “There is just enough spice and it is really juicy — it gets my vote.”

He ended by saying, “They were all very good.”

MVBRB member Scott Long said of the winning burger, “It was very juicy and had a lot of flavor.”

We all thought the burgers had great flavor and just the right amount of bacon for a Dave Grohl burger. It was a very tough decision, and the burger that won had the right blend of flavors to satisfy our palates.

Adam Keck made three Dave Grohl beers for the event: a cream ale, a toasted amber lager, and an American lager. Keck said he was trying to make a Grohl beer that would appeal to everyone.

The beers had seven judges using a 100-point grading scale, and the winning beer won by just one point.
