Woman in police custody cuts wrist; Campbell mayor wants answers

Staff report

Campbell’s mayor says he wants more details about how a woman who was detained at the police station was able to cut her wrists.

An internal report directed to the police chief indicates the woman was in custody on a probation violation Sept. 4.

She was in a holding room while her court documents were being processed, the report indicates.

The woman was going to be taken to Mahoning County jail pending her probation-violation hearing, the report continues.

Officers were preparing her for transport when they discovered she was bleeding from her wrist, it states.

The woman told police then that she cut her wrists and wished to kill herself, the report continues. An ambulance took her to St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Mayor Bill VanSuch said this week he has sent a letter to Police Chief Gus Sarigianopoulos requesting more details.

“How long was she left alone? How did she get access [to a sharp implement]? Was she searched properly?” he said.
