Pumpkin weigh-off to be Oct. 13

The Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers will have its 18th annual giant- pumpkin world championship weigh-off Oct. 13 at Parks Garden Center, 9010 U.S. Route 62.

Categories include heaviest giant pumpkin, watermelon, tomato and Halloween-type pumpkin, widest sunflower head, and longest gourd. The prize for the heaviest giant pumpkin is $5,000. If a pumpkin breaks 2,000 pounds, an extra $10,000 will be awarded. More than $25,000 in prize money will be awarded.

Entries should be brought to Parks Garden Center by 9 a.m. The weigh-off will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Exhibits will be on display until 4 p.m.

Pumpkins, gourds, mums and fall decorations will be available for purchase. Food also will be sold.

The Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers has 275 members. It has an annual weigh-off for the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth, which conducts more than 100 weigh-offs in many countries to determine the world champion.
