NHL lockout could put start of season on ice

Associated Press

SAN JOSE, Calif.

The NHL has kept its word fulfilling its threat to impose a lockout if no new labor agreement was in place when the old one expired at midnight.

The lockout all but guarantees training camps won’t open Friday as planned and puts the Oct. 11 start of the 2012-13 season in jeopardy.

In shutting down operations for the third time in 18 years, the NHL is once again testing the patience of its fan base.

Defenseman Douglas Murray, the only Shark on the NHL Players Association negotiating committee, acknowledged the challenge of explaining things from the players’ perspective.

“People see how much money we make and we have,” he said. “But I would ask them what would you say if the owner of the company you work for would come and tell you, ‘OK, we’re taking away 20 percent of your salary.’ And you ask why, they say, ‘I just want to make more money.’ “
