Prisoner dies at Guantanamo

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico

Another prisoner has died at the U.S. Navy base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the U.S. military said Monday, two days after the man apparently was found unconscious in his cell at the isolated, high-security prison.

Guards administered first aid to the prisoner before he was rushed to a base hospital, where he was declared dead “after extensive lifesaving measures had been performed,” the U.S. military’s Southern Command said in a brief statement.

The prisoner’s name and nationality were not released. But U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release his identity, said he was from Yemen.

Experts have yet to determine what caused the early-afternoon death since there were no obvious signs, said Navy Capt. Robert Durand, a spokesman for the prison.

Mayor arrested in corruption probe

TRENTON, N.J.

Federal agents arrested the struggling mayor of New Jersey’s capital Monday on corruption charges, alleging he agreed to accept bribes in connection with a proposed parking garage — actually a fake project created by authorities trying to snare him.

Trenton Mayor Tony Mack, his brother Ralphiel and convicted sex offender Joseph Giorgianni, a Mack supporter who owns a Trenton sandwich shop, were each accused of a single charge: conspiring to extort the undercover informants who pulled them into the scheme.

Suspect in slaying of cop found dead

WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.

A former auto executive suspected of gunning down an officer who responded to a trouble call in an affluent Detroit suburb was found dead inside his house Monday evening, police said.

Police had been surrounding the home of Rickey Coley since Sunday night, when an officer was shot to death while responding to a report of a possible suicide attempt or medical emergency.

Police used construction equipment to tear a hole in a second-floor wall of the home Monday afternoon, then sent in a robot to look for the suspect, West Bloomfield Township Supervisor Michele Economou Ureste. The robot found Coley’s body on a bed, surrounded by knives and other weapons, she said.

Syria defector: Opposition can win

BEIRUT

Syria’s most prominent defector said in an interview that aired Monday that he opposes any foreign military intervention in the country’s civil war and that he is confident the opposition can topple President Bashar Assad’s regime.

But Manaf Tlass, a Syrian general who was the first member of Assad’s inner circle to join the opposition, said the rebels need weapons.

“The Syrian people must not be robbed of their victory; they must be given support, aid, arms,” Tlass said in a recorded interview that aired Monday on French television station BFM.

FAMU: Victim is to blame for death

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.

Florida A&M University, which has been rocked by a hazing scandal for nearly a year, insists in legal papers filed Monday that it is not to blame for the tragic death last year of drum major Robert Champion.

The university maintained that it was Champion, not the school, who bears the ultimate responsibility for his death. Champion died last November after he was beaten by fellow members of the famed Marching 100 band aboard a charter bus parked outside an Orlando hotel.

The university asserts that the 26-year-old Champion was a top leader in the band and he should have refused to take part in the hazing ritual.
