Online campaign to help Youngstown soup kitchen raises $12K

Staff report

An online fundraising campaign started Saturday raised more than $12,000 in less than 30 hours for the Mahoning County St. Vincent de Paul Society.

The effort, started by users of Fark, an online news aggregator, quickly pulled together the effort on indiegogo.com in a show of defense to combat the backlash facing the society and its president, Brian J. Antal.

Antal faced criticism late last week from some donors who threatened to stop making contributions to the soup kitchen because of the way he responded to a visit from Republican vice-presidential-nominee Paul Ryan, whom Antal said “ramrodded” his way into the kitchen without permission for an impromptu photo opportunity.

Those wishing to donate in the campaign can go to indiegogo.com/projects.

The good people at Fark are not finished! Expect much much more. These people are quite generous and see through the silliness of it all, hungry people will be fed.

@Shot -- Agreed! It is critical to feed those stomachs which would otherwise go mostly empty due to hard times or bad luck. (A shame Mr Antal's priority was to feed his ravenous ego.)

Spin, spin, spin! Cover the controversy and turn it all into positives. Whatever. SVDeP showed the true colors. We all saw it. Good luck in the future with your 12K. Any decent auditor would pull your 501c3 and cost you twenty times that in back taxes. Where are the looney left atheists denouncing this organization again? Oh yeah, those religious bigots only denounce when the party isn't upholding their political views. The hypocrisy made me throw up in my mouth a little right there. You guys literally make me sick. Best of luck at the pearly gates too.

I wonder how that 12k stacks up against the long term losses. I agree the tax free status of this organization should be revoked

Well this left Atheist only has a problem with religion in public/government. This is a private charity so they can be affiliated with the church of the flying spaghetti monster for all i care.

Its religion in government and in public institutions that gets us riled up.

This is a faith-based Catholic charity that receives tax benefits and grants from the Government. Millions of public money is spent on them and they are Catholics. There is a cross on their banner. What was your point again? That you are a hypocrite? Just admit that you like the place because they share your political affiliations and hate Republicans. Or is truth not something you value? Trick question. Go read about them if you care to inform yourself.

This organization relies on grants and donations of hundreds of thousands of dollars per year just to keep in the black. Twelve thousand is a drop in the bucket in terms of the cash needed to operate yearly. That is the point. Do you get it now?

St Vincent De Paul is neither a governmental organization or a public institution funded solely by the state.

Also I was under the impression that they received the same tax status as any other charity.

Show me that they are receiving direct financing from the government, or tax status that is more preferential than the standard charity status and I'll be the first to contact the Freedom From Religion Foundation, and A.C.L.U. for a lawsuit.

The point remains. You support SVDeP because they HATE the same people you do. Any decent atheist would oppose tax dollars funneled to a Catholic organization that has crosses on all their banners. But not you. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, eh? Nice commitment, hypocrite.

I'm sure you would be off to the ACLU in a heartbeat. SVDeP receives untold grants from the taxpayers every year. They also recceive tax credit from both the Catholic Church angle as well as from 501c3. Happy to help but you really need to go do your own research. Simple research, gathering of information and reading are the reasons I know so much more about it then you do. Maybe cognitive abilities play a role as well. Perhaps education too. Who knows.

By the way, Hitler was a devout anti-theist that used religion to control people in the pragmatic sense. That is atheist. Hitler did not declare his atheism because a huge percentage of the populous was Christian and he knew it would cause his citizens to question his motives. Hitler was the worst kind of atheist- on that would deny it out of expediency.

Stalin was a virulent atheist and the policies were woven directly into his regime, similar to Hitler though not covert.

These tho combined used their loathsome atheist views of humanity to devalue life (in the same way abortion proponents do) to rationalize and justify the outright vicious murder and subversion of hundreds of millions.

Just accept that your theistic and world views align you with some real winners because that is the truth.

I don't recall saying I supported St Vincent De Paul.

btw Stalin spent several years in the seminary and Hitler was a choir boy and also considered joining the church. Perhaps its those experiences that helped turn them into the monsters they became, and don't pretend that Atheists have the monopoly on atrocities.
