YOUNGSTOWN

Mahoning County commissioners approved the distribution of $22,000 among five communities for leaf collection this fall.

The recipients are: Boardman, $10,000; Poland Village and Campbell, $4,000 each; and New Middletown and Lowellville, $2,000 each.

The money is from landfill-dumping fees collected by the county’s recycling division, but none of the leaves will go to any landfill. All leaves collected under this program will go to a licensed composting facility, said Mari Wren Petrony, assistant director for the division known as The Green Team.

Some communities use collection bags, and others use vacuum trucks, Wren Petrony said. Poland Village is new on this list this year. “Every year, we try to bring another community on board,” she said.
