YSU men will play Hiram at Covelli

Staff report

The Youngs-town State men’s basketball team will play at the Covelli Centre for the first time in December.

Eric Ryan hopes it won’t be the last.

The Penguins will play host to Hiram College in the Inaugural Downtown Round Ball Classic on Dec. 8.

“Youngstown State is obviously a huge part of our community and we have been working toward a partnership with them for some time,” said Ryan, the Covelli Centre’s executive director. “As we continue to work with YSU on numerous projects and events, it only makes sense to host a basketball game for the great sports fans of the Mahoning Valley.

“The Covelli Centre was established to host a number of dynamic events, especially with local and regional appeal. The goal is to make the Classic an annual event.”

The Penguins return three starters from last year’s 16-win team, while Hiram also has three starters returning from last year’s 14-12 team. The Terriers compete in Division III.

“We are excited that Eric Ryan and the Covelli Centre staff approached us to host this game,” said YSU athletic director Ron Strollo said. “The Covelli Centre is a tremendous venue and gives our student-athletes an opportunity to play in front of our fans in another outstanding facility. “

Tickets are on sale now at the Covelli Centre box office and www.ticketmaster.com.

General admission tickets are $7, center court reserved tickets at $12 and a limited number of VIP floor seats are $15. YSU students will receive one complimentary ticket per valid YSU ID to redeem at the Covelli Centre box office only.

Season-ticket holders and Courtside Coaches member will receive tickets equivalent to their season-ticket packages.
