New Castle man hospitalized after being shot by New Castle police

Staff report

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the shooting of a suspect in a hostage situation, and officers involved are on administrative leave.

Officers shot Ivy J. Lanthier, 43, after he shot inside a house at 1 Montgomery Ave., then left the house with a shotgun and a handgun.

Lanthier was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, where he was in critical condition.

The situation unfolded shortly after midnight Friday. Police had set up a perimeter around the house.

State police said Lanthier had gone into his 22-year-old daughter’s bedroom and shot both guns into the ceiling there.

He told her, a juvenile female and a 48-year-old woman to leave while telling his daughter’s 29-year-old boyfriend to stay.

New Castle Police tried to negotiate, but when Lanthier came out, he fired his handgun multiple times, state police said. Officers fired back and he was struck. Reports from New Castle and state police do not indicate how many officers were involved, but the Associated Press is reporting that four officers have been placed on leave.
