Cincy zoo live Tweets giraffe birth

Published: Fri, October 12, 2012 @ 5:45 p.m.

CINCINNATI (AP) — A baby giraffe has been born with a social media audience getting updates.

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden sent news and photos over Twitter today as 6-year-old Tessa labored and gave birth to a female calf at 8:28 a.m. EDT. The zoo said this afternoon both were doing well and will be available for public viewing Monday.

Zoo spokeswoman Tiffany Barnes says the zoo sent out dozens of Tweets over more than two hours. She says the zoo believes thousands of social media users were following the updates based on Twitter responses.

Barnes says it’s the first time the zoo has live Tweeted an animal birth, but it plans to do more. It also will update the baby giraffe’s progress.
