U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson has an 8 percentage points lead over his Democratic challenger in the 6th Congressional District, according to a poll conducted on behalf of his campaign and the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Johnson’s campaign provided complete results of the poll Wednesday to The Vindicator.

The poll, conducted by Public Opinion Strategies, a national Republican research firm, has Johnson of Marietta, R-6th, with 47 percent of the vote to 39 percent for Democrat Charlie Wilson of St. Clairsville. The poll shows both with 3 percent of the remaining people leaning in their favor and 7 percent are undecided.

The firm polled 400 likely voters on Sept. 26 and 27 with a margin of error of 4.9 percent. Of those polled, 36 percent identified themselves as Republicans, 34 percent as Democrats and 28 percent as either leaning toward one of the two parties, independents or didn’t identify a party affiliation.

Of those polled, 32 percent had a favorable opinion of Johnson to 21 with an unfavorable opinion, 21 percent had no opinion of him and 26 percent had never heard of him.

As for Wilson, 33 percent had a favorable opinion, 31 had an unfavorable opinion, 19 had no opinion of him and 18 percent never heard of him.

Wilson represented the 6th District for four years before losing by 5 percent in 2010 to Johnson.

The Wilson campaign on Sept. 17 provided The Vindicator with results of a poll conducted on its behalf that showed both candidates tied at 46 percent, with 8 percent undecided. Wilson provided only partial results.

That's a shame, that Johnson is leading in the polls. He's afraid to even debate against Wilson, apparently. He's been a no-show twice now.

Anyone who votes for Wilson is an Idiot. But then again, they are the same people that will vote for Obama again. So now I understand.

OH, I meant to also say that Romney cleaned Obama's clock in the 1st debate.

Using gdog's 2 famous words about Romney are not working.

Maybe Obama could use some of that HOPE & CHANGE, THAT HE TALKED ABOUT IN 2008, in the next debate.

Only in regressive southeastern Ohio could a carpet-bagger like Johnson win.
