The ninth annual Kelly Jo Carlson Special Olympics Swim Meet is Saturday at the Warren G. Harding High School Natatorium.
The meet, which starts at 1 p.m., serves as a qualifier for the Special Olympics state meet later this year in Columbus.
Kelly Jo, who died at 33 on April 21, 2004, was involved in local swimming circles and was a three-sport athlete at Warren Western Reserve High School, earning letters in swimming, softball and tennis. In addition to her volunteer activities, she was student body president her senior year.
She went on to graduate from Kent State University and was completing a master’s degree in business administration at Webster University in San Diego at the time of her death.
She had volunteered at Special Olympics beginning as a child, and her parents, Paul and Lois Carlson of Bazetta Township, and other family members and friends have continued that tradition by sponsoring Saturday’s swim meet.
Contributions to help fund the meets can be sent to Special Olympics, Fairhaven School, 420 Lincoln Way, Niles, OH 44446 in Kelly’s name. The money donated in Kelly’s memory is used for pool fees, officials, security, lifeguards, awards and other meet costs, Carlson said.
