Child abuse suspect learns jail phone calls recorded

EBENSBURG, Pa. (AP) — A western Pennsylvania county jail inmate has learned the hard way that inmate phone calls are recorded.

That’s because Cambria County Judge Norman Krumenacker doubled the bail of Carl Harris after the judge learned the suspect had called his girlfriend from jail and tried to get her to change her story about how he allegedly injured their 8-week-old son.

The Tribune-Democrat reports the 20-year-old Johnstown man is charged with aggravated assault and other counts for allegedly breaking the baby’s leg because the child wouldn’t stop crying on Aug. 15.

Krumenacker learned of the calls when Harris’ attorney asked Tuesday for his $75,000 bail to be lowered so he could get out of jail pending trial. Instead, the judge raised the bail to $150,000.
