Canfield girls golf team just misses trip to state

By one stroke, the Canfield High girls golf team missed qualifying for a trip to state in the Division I tournament.

Tuesday at the Legends Golf Course, Canfield shot 352 to finish sixth in the 16-team event.

The top five teams advance to state. Massillon Jackson won the tournament with a 313, two strokes ahead of Magnificat.

Medina Highland was third with 321, followed by North Canton Hoover with 343 and Notre Dame Cathedral Latin with 351.

Howland, the only other Mahoning Valley team in the event, finished 12th with a score of 386.

Christina Cooper shot 83 to lead the Cardinals. She missed qualifying as an individual by six strokes. Lianna Tucci was next with 89. Following her were Kerra Loomis and Michele Whiteleather (both with 90) and Olivia DeMartino with 103.

For Howland, Angelica Maggio led with 90, followed by Hannah Buzelencia with 94, Haleigh Guerrero with 97, Mo Preston with 105 and Sarah Brindley with 106.

Jackson’s Cassie Pantelas won the event with 71. Medina Highland’s Jesica Porvasnik and Magnificat’s Jillian Hollis tied for second with 73.

Individuals qualifying for state were Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, 75), Alice Ho (Wadsworth, 75), Kasey Nielsen (Kent, 75), Kelly Nielsen (Kent, 77) and Nikolette Schroeder (Avon Lake, 77).
