Last day to register

YOUNGSTOWN

Today is the final day to register to vote in Ohio for the Nov. 6 general election. Boards of elections in Trumbull and Columbiana counties will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today to accept voter registrations. In Mahoning County, the board office is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is located at Oakhill Renaissance Place, 345 Oak Hill Ave. in Youngstown. In Trumbull County, the board is at 2947 Youngstown Road SE in Warren. The Columbiana County board is at 7989 Dickey Drive in Lisbon.

To register, you need either your Ohio driver’s license number or the last four digits of your Social Security number.

Reading conference

YOUNGSTOWN

Three award-winning authors will be among the keynote speakers at the 2012 Annual Reading Conference, a professional-development event for teachers across Ohio, Oct. 26 and 27 at Youngstown State University.

This year’s theme is “Creating a Sense of Wonder that Engages ALL Readers.”

Mary Lou DiPillo and Regina Rees, both professors in the Beeghly College of Education at YSU, are co-chairwomen. Keynote speakers for the two-day event are:

David Adler, author of more than 200 books, including math texts, biographies, historical fiction and fictional works.

Conrad Storad, award- winning author of more than 40 science and nature books for children and young adults.

Barbara Moss, professor of literacy education at San Diego State University, who has studied the use of informational text in the classroom.

Kevin O’Malley, author/ illustrator of the Miss Malarky series.

School bus accident

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are investigating an accident on the North Side on Monday involving a Cadillac and a school bus carrying six children.

The Youngstown City Schools bus was traveling east on Norwood Avenue about 3:20 p.m. when it collided in the intersection with a Cadillac going south on Convington Avenue. There was minimal damage to the school bus, but the car has extensive damage.

A school official said the six children on board the bus were not injured.
