Gardening program

Canfield

The Ohio State University Extension will present a gardening program from 5:30 to 8:45 p.m. next Tuesday at McMahon Hall at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road.

The program, an installment of the gardening adventure series, will focus on soils, growing herbs indoors, hydrangeas, house plants, container gardening, bulbs and fall cleanup and will help participants plan to continue gardening through the winter and prepare for the 2013 gardening season.

Sessions are taught by local experts, including OSU Extension Master Gardener volunteers. Early registrations are encouraged but will be taken at the door. Cost is $15 to cover handouts and a packet of all session information. For information, call 330-533-5538.

Firework injures girl

sharon, pa.

A 10-year-old girl was hurt after she mistakenly lighted a firework she thought was a candle, the Sharon Fire Department said.

The accident happened at 8:08 p.m. Sunday.

The girl, who found the firework in the basement at her Quimby Street home, severely injured her left hand. She also had injuries to her face, chest and right arm, the department said.

Two other children were slightly injured. The department did not have ages available.

The girl was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Railroad seminar

Darlington, Pa.

The Little Beaver Historical Society will host the Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad Seminar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 27 at Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 718 Market St., state Route 551.

Multimedia programs and keynote speakers will be: New Castle American Cyanamid Dynamite Railroad, P&LE Mahoning State Line Branch to Hillsville and Bessemer, the B&O Foxburg switchback to Clarion, and author Wayne A. Cole with his new book “Ghost Rails IX State Line Legends.”

For advance tickets, send $20, which includes lunch, to Little Beaver Historical Society, P.O. Box 304, Darlington, PA 16115. Cost is $25 at the door.

2 injured in fight

NEW CASTLE, PA.

Two women were injured in a fight at a bar in New Castle, Pa., police said.

City police reported that a large fight broke out in front of the Capitol Grill on North Mercer Street around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Two women were taken to Jameson Hospital with lacerations after being cut with a knife, a police report says.

The report said Georgia Murphy, 50, of Denver Street in New Castle was arrested and will face charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangering, disorderly conduct, public drunkenness and harassment.

Police responding to the fight also had a report of shots fired in the area, but no one was shot, said Police Chief Robert Salem.
