22 liquor options set for Mahoning ballots

If previous elections are an indication, the 22 liquor options on the Nov. 6 ballot throughout Mahoning County stand a strong chance of being approved by voters.

Since November 2008, voters in Mahoning County approved 82 of the 89 liquor options, a 94.3-percent success rate, according to an analysis by The Vindicator.

“A majority of them are passing, and the percentage of passing is increasing substantially,” said Richard Nagel, a clerk in charge of liquor options at the Mahoning County Board of Elections. “Maybe people are becoming more accepting of having businesses sell alcohol.”

The 22 options on this ballot is the most since November 2009, when all 24 options on the ballot were passed.

“There’s no rhyme or reason to this,” Nagel said.

During the past three elections — May and November 2011 and the primary this past March — there were 23 total liquor options.

The only one defeated was for Sunday sales at Steelyard Wine Merchant in Boardman Precinct 9, at 18 Boardman-Poland Road, losing 103-96. In a twist, voters in that same election approved a liquor option at the same business to sell alcohol on the six other days of the week in a 107-92 vote of support.

The Sunday sales at Steelyard is on the fall ballot.

Here are the liquor options for this election:
