Park board should re-evaluate

The Park Commissioners an- nounced during a special meeting Sept. 18 both the resignation of the executive director of Mill Creek MetroParks and the selection of his replacement. The Board’s hasty selection of the new executive director without the opportunity for any public input is troubling.

Mill Creek MetroParks is an irreplaceable public treasure and citizens have a right to expect that the process for filling the position charged with overseeing and protecting this priceless community asset be transparent and open to citizen input. This is especially important now as pressure grows to allow gas drilling that could pollute and forever change the character of the park lands.

With this in mind, we the undersigned Mahoning County citizens and organizations, concerned with the environmental health of Mill Creek MetroParks and the transparency and integrity of our public institutions, call upon Mill Creek MetroParks’ Board to designate the new appointee as an interim executive director, pending completion of an open and inclusive process to identify a new permanent executive director. The renewed selection process should, at a minimum, provide for a nationwide candidate search and meaningful citizen input to help ensure that Mill Creek MetroParks has the highest quality leadership possible. We look forward to a response at Wednesday night’s park commissioners’ board meeting.
