At least 1 injured in New Castle shooting


City police are investigating a shooting that occurred early Sunday on North Mercer Street.

The shooting outside the Capitol Grill left at least one person injured, according to the Vindicator’s broadcast partner, 21 WFMJ-TV.

Fire Safety Expo set in Boardman


Southern Park Mall and the Western Reserve Joint Fire District will have a Fire Safety Expo from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday to help connect local families to fire-safety educators.

During the event, firetrucks and fire-safety trailers will be in the parking lot for children and families to explore.

Local firefighters will be stationed inside the mall to teach children about smoke detectors and the “stop, drop and roll” technique, among other topics. Various giveaways also will be available for children in attendance.

Exhibitors also will be set up at the Fire Safety Expo featuring restoration companies who can speak to attendees about remodeling and cleaning property damaged in a fire, according to a news release.

Fire destroys house in Youngstown


An East Side home is a total loss after a Sunday morning fire.

Firefighters were called to 3105 Regis Ave. about 4:30 a.m. Sunday, and when crews arrived, flames had engulfed the house and the second floor had collapsed, according to reports.

The homeowner said he left his home about 11 p.m. Saturday, and when he returned about 4:30 a.m., he found his two-story home on fire, reports stated. No one was inside the house at the time of the fire.

Lane restrictions on Routes 7, 224


State Route 7 in Beaver Township and U.S. Route 224 in Boardman will have various lane restrictions this week for pavement repairs.

The specific sections of road affected are Route 7 between Western Reserve Road and state Route 164 and Route 224 between Raccoon Road and Route 7.
