Muslims stand for peace, leader asserts at mosque open house today

By SEAN BARRON

news@vindy.com YOUNGSTOWN

Randa Shabayek wants to reinforce that the vast majority of Muslims stand for peace and should not be judged by the few who distort and misinterpret the Quran’s teachings.

“We’re all brothers and sisters,” Shabayek, president of the Islamic Society of Greater Youngstown, said in expressing a main theme of today’s fifth annual open house at the Masjid Al-Khair mosque, 1670 Homewood Ave. on the South Side.

The four-hour gathering, which continues until 3 p.m. today, features tours of the mosque, as well as a variety of ethnic foods, clothing, books and pamphlets on the Islamic faith and activities for children.

Filling the mosque’s basement were the aromas of samosas (triangular-shaped pastries filled with potato or ground beef) and chicken biryani (a rice-and-chicken dish), both prepared by Saeeda Ghani, an Islamic Society board member.

The two ethnic dishes, along with bhel puri (tortillas with chicken peas, yogurt or chutney that can be complemented with spices) and chanas (spicy chick peas), originate in Pakistan, she explained.

Other foods included pickled tomatoes, hummus, grape leaves and spinach pies.

On the sweeter side of things was cotton candy prepared by Manal Hamdan, a society member.

Ghani said she also hopes more people will come to events such as today’s open house to gain a greater understanding of the Islamic faith.

Everyone has some concept of Divinity- who or what God is: for some God is personified- a real person, a Father and a Son, a Prophet, etc. - and that is the Middle Eastern Tradition based on Divine Revelation. Judaism, Christianity and Islam follow this approach. For others, God is a mystical force, identified with nature: Buddhists, and all Eastern Religions follow this path.

Interestingly, when adherents of the Middle Eastern approach "chill out" and lose some of the literalism of their beliefs, they become more like Buddhists- they mellow out and become more peaceable.

That suggests to me that "Buddhism" (or something like it) is the default position (closest to the way human beings are supposed to be) and that the Middle Eastern approach is an aberration- a violation of human nature- which accounts for the incredible violence which those religions have generated.

So, having said that, it follows that the peaceful Islamics are peaceful because they no longer take their religion seriously. The real followers of Islam, as contained in the Koran, are the Jihadists- not the ecumenical "peace loving" people that you find in the local group mentioned in your article. Mohammed would have disowned those people.

Therefore, given what is happening in the world (post 9-11) we should remember this fact and not be taken in by appearances. The regrettable reality is this: Islam is our enemy and that's not going to change for a long time until the followers of Islam become Buddhists.

KURTW: Peaceful Muslims have no more forsaken their religion than peaceful Christians have forsaken theirs.

As a 100% pro-life Christian (death is not the answer before or after birth, for the innocent or for the guilty), I do not let violent or crazy "Christians" define my faith or have their only their say with holy scripture.

Both the Quran and the Bible's Old Testament have passages that, if used literally, would be deadly, violent and result in behavior at odds with a modern civil society.

The gentle people I met at the mosque today did not try to convert me, nor I them. As a Christian, I know God loves all people and seeks their worship and allegiance. The historical Jesus is a wonderful connection between Christian and Muslim believers of good will.

A relationship of respectful friendship - that clearly admits differences about the ultimate role of Jesus - is the place I chose to start for a more humane Mahoning Valley.

With God, all things are possible.

I understand your approach. The only problem I have is that in all Middle Eastern Religions- Judaism, Christianity, and Islam- the "word of God" is just that: "The Word of God" so what justification is there for not taking it literally? It came directly from God, so anyone who strays, is an apostate. It's illogical to say that certain instructions came directly from God, and, then, not to take them literally. It doesn't make sense.

Buddhists don't have that problem- they identify Divinity with Nature- that was my point in saying that, possibly, Buddhism is the 'default" position to which everyone goes to when they give up Superstition.

YB&R never cease to amaze us with your small thin line of thought. "Action of a few" For real?? Excuse everyone for their opinion (wow) I just had to laugh at that for lack of a better word "Goofy" statement. Watch some of the news reels of some of these countries conflicts, children in the street throwing rocks, burning our flags, our gov't buildings etc... (a few)this society has been fighting since the begining of time and will continue to fight no matter what.As normal people can clearly see , and likewise with many of the posters here(Except you of course). These countries hate us and our beliefs and forever will. The only thing they like is our dumb as*es sending them money for killing our people. The "FEW" are way to many in this religion and I think the American people are finally waking up and their game has been figured out. Practice any religion you want but leave the killing to the idiots and recognize them as that. As I've stressed before comic books are not your best source of facts

Most all of these NICE countries were killing their OWN people way before any of the above. These countries have breed this type of behavior like i said wayyyyyyyyy before any of the most recent news. But thats history which you should read about. History tends to give you an insite on things and if you study history you will understand why these people of these regions hate EVERYBODY and have no problem killing their own people to prove it since time began. This is the most hypacritical religion going. So you can see if you open your eyes its a pretty good indicator of their pattern of behavior. Its nothing anyone did to them its inbreed hate and distruction. But they will take our foolish money we give them to buy more weapons to kill us, just think if we spent that money on our wounded military service people or our poor, someone who would truely appreciate it and needs it. So answer to your questions based on facts and history THEY DON'T NEED A REASON TO KILL!!!! Waking up in the morning is a good reason to these idiots

I see one of the "FEW" shot a teenage girl (Pulitzer winner I think) she must have deserved i, right? Like I've stated they can BS you all they want but these people for the most are idiots and indiscriminate killers that claim to be very religious (what a joke huh), and want to spread their "JOY" all over the world if we let them. Amazing how some people will buy into their BS. I'm guessing there will be a post right now to defend this attack and how she was asking for it and how these people just want to get along.

Muslims are simply another group of people in the world...think of them what you may, but they are still part of human race.

Maybe we need a new defintion for the Human Race to fit them and not normal people. One for individules who kill randomly in the guise of GOD, Allah or what ever, teach their children to do the same. I don't know but Human Race even with a great stretch of the definition just does not seem to fit them in my opinion. A race of people who have since the beginning of time been brutal killers of everyone and a hate for anyone not agreeing with their beliefs. Just ask the 14-year old girl shot in the head for wanting to to to school. Who cares what they believe in or do but when it effects our county, military, or citizens we need to be concerned. So I'm waiting for some suggestions on a new catagory for them!
