Blessed Sacrament Church, 3020 Reeves Road NE, will host Jos Rub n de Le ≥n of San Antonio, Texas, for a special “Evening of Prayer on Mark’s Gospel: A Drama of Hope” at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The program is based on the first eight chapters of Mark. The one-hour performance offers the excitement of theater, the serenity of a religious experience and a prayer of hope.

A free-will offering will be accepted. Dessert and fellowship follow in Holy Family Hall.

A morning retreat will be offered with de Le ≥n beginning with Mass at 8:30 a.m. and continental breakfast at 9.

Speaker planned

St. Paul Church of Salem is sponsoring a presentation by the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Mickler at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at St. Paul School Hall, 925 E. State St.

It will follow the recitation of the rosary in the St. Paul Church at 6:30.

All are welcome to attend “Faith & Citizenship: The First Century & the Twenty-First Century.” The program will discuss such questions as: How can someone be moral in an immoral society and be virtuous in a world that promotes vice? What must a Catholic consider when bringing a well- informed conscience into the voting booth? How did the first-century saints interact with the Roman Empire?

Father Mickler is Superior of The Society of St. Paul in Canfield. He earned a doctorate in systematic at theology from Fordham University. He was ordained in 1974. He is producing a 17-part series with the Rev. James Korda on Vatican Council.

Baptist convention

The 94th annual session of the Ohio Baptist State Convention will be Oct. 16-19 at Union Baptist Church, 528 Lincoln Ave.

The guest conference speaker at 7 nightly will be the Rev. Dr. Selwyn Q. Bachus, senior pastor of Salem Baptist Church in Omaha, Neb.

Workshops will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 17 and 18. Cost to attend for churches outside the Ohio Baptist State Convention is $300 for unlimited delegates; $150 for a pastor and one delegate; and $7 per person. There is no cost to attend the evening services.

The presidential luncheon is planned for noon Oct. 18 with Pastor Charles Jones of Christian Temple Baptist Church in Toledo as guest preacher. Donation for luncheon tickets is $35.

On Oct. 19, the WC Thomas Power Packed Preach-A-Thon will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and Pastor Michael Harrison Sr., convention president, will give his annual address at 7 p.m.

200th anniversary

Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 388 E. Midlothian Blvd., is marking 200 years of service. In its third church building, the Midlothian Free Health Clinic is housed there. Robin Brown is the minister.

On Sunday, former Pastor Wayne Niemi will speak. Also planned are: Oct. 14, the Rev. Rosetta Carter of ACTION; Oct. 21, Pastor Robert Johnson, former pastor and a clinic founder; and Oct. 28, Bishop Elizabeth Eaton of the Northeastern Ohio Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Services are at 11 a.m.

75th anniversary

St. Lucy Church, 394 Tenney Ave., of Christ the Good Shepherd Parish, will celebrate its 75th anniversary during a Mass at 5 p.m. Oct. 20 with Bishop George V. Murry.

Mahayana Tradition

The Manjushri Study Group of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition will offer a series of teachings at Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown, 1105 Elm St., by visiting Lama Geshe Soepa. Soepa received his Lharampa Geshe degree at Sera Je Monastic University in 1994. He was resident teacher at Aryatara Institute in Germany for seven years.

Saturday sessions will be: 1 to 3 p.m., “The Value of Taking Refuge: How the Three Jewels Protect Us,” and 4 to 6, “The Benefits of Relying on a Guru.”

Sunday sessions will be from 1 to 3 p.m., “Karma – The Role of Causes and Conditions” and 4 to 6, “How to Purify Negative Karma.”

Suggested donation is $10 per session.

From 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Youngstown State University board of trustees room in Tod Hall, the topic will be “Ethical Practice: Laying the Foundation for a Good Life.” The free public talk is co-sponsored with the James Dale Ethics Center

Braille ministry

Glynn Langston, founder and director of Insight International, a Braille Outreach Ministry, will present information about his organization Sunday at the truck- stop service at the Petro Truck Stop and Shopping Center in Girard. Services begin at 9 a.m. Free coffee and donuts are provided.

He graduated cum laude from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. Through Insight International Langston and his family provide free Biblical literature, including large-print Bibles and audio cassettes, to the visually impaired.

Event for women

Glenwood Christian Fellowship, 7872 Glenwood Ave., will host the seventh annual women’s event, “Come to the Fire,” through “live streaming.”

Sessions will be from 8 to 10 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday (with lunch and dinner breaks; meals on your own) and from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. next Saturday.

The interdenominational event, “Overflow with Love,” will originate from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill.

Red Mass planned

The 16th annual Red Mass, a celebration for those who serve in the judicial and legal professions, is planned at noon Oct. 25 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 343 Via Mount Carmel. Bishop George V. Murry will be homilist.

A luncheon will follow in Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish hall. Reservations are necessary for the luncheon (note special dietary needs) and checks in the amount of $20 may be made payable to the Diocese of Youngstown.

Workshop planned

The Office of Propagation of Faith and Missions and Office of Social Action/Catholic Relief Services of the Diocese of Youngstown will host a covenant planning session from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. next Saturday in St. Columba Hall, 154 W. Wood St.

“Missionary Advocacy for Social Justice” will be the topic of the Rev. Thomas McQuaid of Catholic Relief Services Regional Office in Chicago.

Parishes with a mission outreach in the diocese are asked to send at least two representatives. Other parishes considering mission exchange are welcome.
