Monday forum: A candidates forum, sponsored by the Core Team Ministry, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Union Baptist Church, 528 Lincoln Ave.
Candidates for 7th District Court of Appeals, 13th Congressional District, Mahoning County commissioner and county recorder have been invited. Also invited are representatives for President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney, the U.S. Senate race, and the Ohio Supreme Court justice races, at the forum. Representatives will be on hand to explain the two state issues, the four proposed amendments to the Youngstown city charter, the Youngstown renewal school levy, and the county tax issues, that will appear on the Nov. 6 ballot.
Candidate forum: The Liberty Business Association and the Liberty Schools PTA is sponsoring a candidate/issue forum at 7 p.m. Oct. 17. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. Invited to attend are candidates for the state Legislature and Trumbull County commissioner. Also, a Liberty trustee will discuss the four township tax issues on the ballot.
With early voting underway — and busier than it was in 2008 — and Election Day about a month away, The Vindicator is providing its readers with information about candidates and issues to help people make informed choices.
Those in the newsroom and at Vindy.com have spent numerous hours preparing for the election. We’ve already held numerous endorsement interviews and there are plenty more to go.
By the way, if you’re a candidate in a competitive race in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties and you haven’t filled out your online questionnaire, contact me at email@example.com. Overall, the response has been excellent, but we haven’t heard from a few.
Beginning Sunday, the newspaper and Vindy.com will have one or two articles on candidate races and ballot issues every day. These profile articles will run through Oct. 28.
Among the highlights are our Sunday pieces beginning in two days with the Youngstown school levy.
The following Sunday will be a package of the Western Reserve Transit Authority’s 0.25 of a percent sales tax renewal and the two other Mahoning County issues.
On Oct. 21, we’ll examine the U.S. Senate race between Democrat Sherrod Brown, the incumbent, and Josh Mandel, his Republican opponent.
We finish on Oct. 28 with articles on Boardman school’s additional levy, and Poland school’s attempt to again get a new tax levy approved by voters.
In between, we’re writing about commissioner races in Mahoning and Trumbull counties, several judicial campaigns, congressional match-ups, the state Legislature and the Ohio Supreme Court, among others.
Also, the newspaper’s endorsements begin Sunday.
Over at Vindy.com, the Election section of our website has undergone a facelift — and a good one. Think the opposite of Bruce Jenner and Kenny Rogers.
On the homepage is an “Election 2012” section. It’s about one-third of the way down on Vindy.com.
If you click on “races” you can read answers to key questions submitted by candidates in competitive races.
We’re writing articles about several tax levies and charter amendments. If you want a list of every issue on the ballot in the Mahoning Valley, click on “issues” and then click on any of the levies to find out the millage, the number of years, how much money would be raised and the purpose of each.
There are also links to election articles, which will grow daily.
Our “video” link currently brings you to older election videos. But in the coming days, that link will also have lengthy portions of our endorsement interviews with candidates for U.S. Senate and the 6th and new 13th congressional districts.
There are a lot of decisions to be made during this election and we are doing our part to make that process a little easier.
Also, don’t forget to check Vindy.com on election night, Nov. 6, for the latest updates and results on the races and issues.
