State says Campbell schools fudged results

COLUMBUS

Campbell City Schools is among five districts statewide that improperly withdrew students, thus possibly improving test results reported to the state.

State Auditor Dave Yost announced the preliminary findings Thursday after reviewing records at 100 schools in 47 districts for scrubbing.

In Mahoning County, Memorial High and Campbell Middle schools did not have supporting documents verifying that the withdrawals of 11 high and 29 middle schools were proper. A further review revealed 32 out of 40 student withdrawals were made in May or June 2011 after test students’ test results were determined.

Yost stopped short of categorizing the practices in Campbell, Columbus, Cleveland, Toledo or Marion as criminal, saying his office did not determine intent. But he called for the state to institute better accountability and cross-checks of enrollment and withdrawal records.
