Sowell got one right

Sowell got one right

In his latest column, Thomas Sowell wrote the following: “We need more tax revenue, not higher tax rates that can backfire.” The tax cuts that were instituted by George W. Bush have most certainly backfired.

The tax code, said to be 70,000 pages long, keeps growing. That’s what we have to match up. Cut the size of the tax code ... not the size of government. Does anyone remember what happened to the size of government when President Bush created Homeland Security?

A Republican pundit utilizing the accomplishments of former Democratic presidents is in keeping with their traditional election campaign rhetoric.

Reagan got elected because the voters thought they were voting for Franklin Roosevelt. In 111 years of budgets that are contained in the 2012 New York Times Almanac, there were surpluses recorded in 1901, 1920, 1930, 1960, and 2000. Pundits slam Obama for his bailouts but are smugly mum about Bush’s TARP bailout of the banks.

The economy and employment in America have been under fire since 2010 thanks in large part to the inaction of the Party of No in the Senate.

There is certainly enough political blame to toss around for America’s huge debt. But mere blame will not solve our financial woes. Mitt Romney’s non-specific agenda will not either.

SCOPE punishment too severe

Your Sept. 27 editorial, “State should reconsider punishment of SCOPE,” reported what the state of Ohio Department on Aging has put forth on the problems at SCOPE in Warren.

The DOA has said that SCOPE may never again have an in-home health-care program. Never is harsh punishment for the stated infractions that caused no harm to any senior citizen enrolled in the in-home health-care program. Yes, the ODA should reconsider the punishment that they are imposing on the citizens of Trumbull County.

In the Mahoning Valley we are a single family. It is incumbent upon all citizens in the Valley to respond to this harsh punishment. Our local representatives in Columbus should know that this judgment that should not go unchallenged.
