Youngstown council asks state to maintain 3 judges in muni court

Published: Wed, October 3, 2012 @ 10:17 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN

City council voted 4-3 today on a resolution asking the state Legislature to maintain three municipal court judicial seats in Youngstown.

But that vote doesn’t look like it will change the current makeup of the city’s municipal court system.

Mayor Charles Sammarone disagrees with the majority vote, saying the city’s judicial branch needs to cut costs, and not filling the seat vacated July 31 by Robert A. Douglas Jr. through his retirement is a good start.

Also, a spokesman for Gov. John Kasich, who put off filling the vacancy in July at the request of Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor, told The Vindicator tonight that “nothing’s changed from where we sit.”

The elimination of a city municipal court judicial position requires a vote by the state Legislature under Ohio law.

State Rep. Robert F. Hagan of Youngstown, D-60th, who supports the elimination of a city judge, said he plans to wait until early next year to introduce legislation on the issue.

Vindy, why did you show the POS council members who voted to maintain 3 judges? I am amazed by how stupid those 4 people are. We only need 1 and they are voting to keep 3?

I thought the city was in pending financial doom? If they were, city council wouldn't be voting to keep over $100,000 a year in salary and benefits. Thats over half a million in 5 years when the city is supposed to be in the red. Once again, I call BS to the consultant firm and BS to our city council. Its time for these people to go.

Come on now...we need more judges to cut deals and let those crooks out on the streets. I'd hate for them to have to be delayed because of the case load. Poor fellas sitting in jail cells. I saw we move to get 5 judges!
