Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

The city will host the second annual nonviolence parade and rally Sunday.

The parade will start at 3 p.m. in front of the Williamson School of Business on Wood Street and proceed down Hazel Street to downtown. The rally will be in Central Square immediately after the parade. In case of rain, the rally will be moved inside 20 Federal Place.

According to a press release, the parade is designed to make community members aware of the nonviolence movement in the area. The ensuing rally will include state Sen. Joe Schiavoni of Boardman, D-33rd, County Commissioner Carol Rimedio-Righetti, 1st Ward Councilwoman Annie Gillam, and a performance by the Williamson Elementary School choir. The rally will also have a place where people can post pictures and names of loved ones and friends, whose lives were taken by violence.

The event is being sponsored by the Youngstown Sojourn to the Past Students, who participate in a 10-day trip to the South and learn lessons of the civil rights movement such as nonviolence, justice, civic responsibility, compassion, forgiveness, and hope.

Sunday’s event is part of National Nonviolence Week.
