Mahoning County Senior Center is offering help to eligible families and seniors who need assistance with their heating bills this winter through the Home Energy Assistance Program. For information on eligibility requirements, call the center, 330-744-5071.

Man killed in crash

NORTH GEORGETOWN

A 64-year-old Homeworth, Ohio, man was killed early Tuesday afternoon when his pickup truck was struck by another driver who failed to yield at a stop sign at Georgetown and Westville Lake roads.

Pronounced dead at the scene by a Columbiana County Coroner’s investigator was Rick E. Cyders. The crash occurred at about 12:30 p.m.

The driver of a second pickup truck, Winfred A. Alderhold, 76, of Kensington, Ohio, was treated at Aultman Hospital in Canton for nonlife-threatening injuries, according to a Ohio State Highway Patrol report.

Cyders was traveling east on Georgetown when Alderhold, southbound on Westville Lake, failed to stop for a stop sign and hit Cyders. After the crash, both vehicles went off the southeast corner of the intersection where Cyders’ vehicle overturned, ending up on its left side, the patrol said. The crash was still be investigated Tuesday night; charges are pending.

Seeking David Martin

WARREN

An arrest warrant has been issued for David Martin, 28, of Oak Circle Southwest, in the murder of Jeremy Cole, 21, also of Oak Street Southwest. Cole was found shot Thursday just afternoon at his house, which he shared with a woman. The woman also was hit by gunfire but was hit in the hand and survived. She was found in the road on Oak Circle.

Martin has no previous court cases in Warren Municipal Court. Anyone with information is asked to call Warren Police Department dispatching center at 330-2521.

Weekend closings

Youngstown

A few streets will close for the nonviolence parade from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday: Wood Street between Lincoln and Wick avenues; West Commerce Street between Hazel Street and Symphony Way; and West Federal Street between Symphony Way and Market Street.

Mill Creek MetroParks is closing these roads from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday for the Garden District Neighborhood Association 5k Race: West Glacier, West, and Calvary Run drives, Price Road and the Price Road entrance to Fellows Riverside Gardens. On Sunday, Valley Drive will be closed for a wedding ceremony on the Suspension Bridge from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Trees must be replaced

Motorists on Interstate 680 southbound near the U.S. Route 224 exit have probably noticed a large section of woods behind Sam’s Club was cleared recently. Zoning Inspector Anna Mamone said 138 trees were removed without the township’s knowledge and her office will not release a requested sign permit for that location until all the trees are replaced. Mamone said it appears a contractor who was going to install the signs cut the trees. The trees were part of the original plans approved by zoning officials.

Community gardening

Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. is having a free “Introduction to Community Gardening” workshop from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. The workshop will take place on Mineral Springs Avenue, and will focus on how to create and manage a garden. For information, call 330-480-0423.

Classroom supplies

Teachers at Market Street Elementary received awards this week to help supply their classrooms. Second-grade teacher Janet Sypert won “A Day Made Better” Tuesday and received $1,000 worth of school supplies from OfficeMax. The store’s “A Day Made Better” program surprised 1,000 teachers nationwide with $1 million total in classroom supplies, according to OfficeMax’s website.

Today, 20 teachers at Market Street Elementary will receive $50 gift cards from Walmart to be used for school supplies, according to a news release from the retailer.

Teen arrested at mall

A 15-year-old Youngstown male is facing a robbery charge, accused of pushing store employees while trying to take two pairs of jeans from Macy’s at Southern Park Mall. The teen was arrested about 2:45 p.m. Monday after a Macy’s loss- prevention officer said the teen hid jeans in a plastic bag and tried to walk out without paying, according to reports.

When the security guard confronted him, the teen fled, striking a Macy’s manager in the process, police said. The teen was taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center.

Free dentistry Friday

Doctors Mark and Rudolph Braydich of Braydich Dental Inc., 45 East Liberty St., are offering a free day of dentistry for Trumbull County residents with no dental insurance on Friday , in partnership with the Dentistry From The Heart program. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and patients will be seen until 5 p.m. For information, visit www.dentistryfromtheheart.org and/or call 330-534-5408.

Patients are encouraged to come early and will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. They can choose one of these services for free: one filling, a cleaning or one extraction.
