WARREN
An elderly man and woman were severely beaten at about 11 p.m. Tuesday night at their home in the 100 block of Washington Street.
Three men committed the assaults using guns and other metal objects, police said.
Both victims were taken to the hospital for treatment.

What does it matter, whether they were just beaten or whether they were beaten and robbed?
This whole "home invasion" epidemic , which I read about all the time, has me wondering that maybe the penalties for that kind of offense are not severe enough to act as a deterrent.
Anyone who would break into a home and beat up an elderly couple, deserves an extremely severe penalty- a penalty, I am willing to guess, far more severe than the one on the books right now.
Also, I never heard a better case for gun-ownership- a law-abiding citizenry armed to the teeth- than these kinds of cases. If these criminals had thought they faced someone with a weapon, it might have deterred them.
Another thing, was there an electronic alarm system? That might have helped. Many people use barking dogs as alarms, but, in my opinion, electronic alarms are far more cost effective and humane. As far as I am concerned, ATD coupled with Smith & Wesson- and harsh punishment for the criminals, if caught- are the way to deter these crimes.
Grown up bullies with no life...picking on the elderly...hope they get caught and some time in jail where they will be bullied.
