Five is the lucky number for three Mahoning Valley football teams in this week’s Associated Press poll of Ohio’s high school football team.
Austintown Fitch (Division I), Brookfield (Div. IV) and Crestview (Div. V) are all ranked fifth in the poll of the Top 10 teams.
The Falcons (6-0) received one first-place vote while the Warriors (6-0) received three and the Rebels (6-0) received one in the poll of state sportswriters and broadcasters.
With 26 first-place votes, Cleveland St. Ignatius (6-0) has the top spot in Div. I. Also ahead of the Falcons are Cincinnati Colerain, Lakewood St. Edward and Dublin Coffman. For the computer playoff pairings, St. Ignatius and St. Edward are in Region 1 with Fitch.
Friday, the Falcons travel to Massillon. Brookfield will be at home against Ashtabula Edgewood while Crestview welcomes United.
In Div. III, undefeated Niles (6-0) is ranked seventh and received a first-place vote. Friday, the Red Dragons will be at home against Hubbard.
Three other teams received at least 12 points in the poll. In Div. V, Ursuline (3-3), which has lost three straight games, earned 28 points to tie for 12th in the state. Friday, the Irish will travel to Steubenville (5-1). The Big Red were voted eighth in Div. III, one spot behind Niles.
In Div. VI, Warren JFK (5-1), whose only loss was to Brookfield, has 23 points to finish 12th, three spots ahead of Youngstown Christian (5-1).
Saturday, Youngstown Christian will play Imani Christian at Poland while Warren JFK will travel to Parma to play Holy Name.
