Colleges pledge to graduate additional 4 million

Public colleges and universities are pledging they’ll produce an additional 3.8 million graduates by 2025, providing a major boost toward a national target of having 60 percent of adults hold a college degree.

Two leading education groups say 490 institutions enrolling about three-quarters of four-year college students are committing to boosting the number of degrees they award over the next nine years. They say they’ll report their progress annually. A key part of the strategy will involve reaching out to students who’ve dropped out and failed to earn a degree at any institution.

The United States has fallen from first to 14th in the developed world in the proportion of its population with a college education.

Great news! If only the people holding jobs currently felt more certain about pensions and health care so that positions might be vacated and the new graduates could join the workforce, earn a decent living, buy a home raise a family ,etc.,etc.

Dumb. Really, really, really dumb.
Talk to the people up at YSU. Ask how many incoming students have to spend a large block of time (money) taking remedial classes, things that they should have mastered in 10th grade, or before. Ask how many drop out before the first year is complete.
Ask how many "graduates" are in meaningless "-Studies" programs, or in dead end majors like Anthropology, Sociology, and the like. How many jobs are there out there for graduates with a 'degree' in Womyn's Studies, other than as professional grievance mongers?
What there is here is empire building. I've too often dealt with college graduates (two in particular with Master's degrees from a HBCU come to mind) who are functionally ILLITERATE.
No more than 10-12% of the population really has any business in a real college. New Castle School of Trades is another matter.
