Fire safety event
The Boardman Fire Department will have its annual Fire Safety Open House from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the main station, 136 Boardman-Canfield Road.
The event is free to the public and sponsored by the International Association of Firefighters Local 1176. Fire-extinguisher training, safety tips and more will be available. Refreshments also will be provided.
A Mahoning County Fire Safety Expo is planned from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 13 at Southern Park Mall. Local fire departments will provide safety instructions and fun for kids and adults.
Author John Kachuba will give a presentation at 6 p.m. Oct. 30 in the McKinley Memorial Auditorium on ghost hunting in Ohio.
Kachuba, author of “Ghosthunting Ohio” and “Ghosthunting Ohio: On the Road Again,” will share his experiences exploring more than 30 reportedly haunted locations across Ohio.
A question-and-answer period will follow the presentation, and copies of Kachuba’s books will be available for sale.

Christmas volunteers needed in Columbiana
The Columbiana Area Tourism Bureau is looking for volunteers for the Joy of Christmas light show for the 2012 holiday season. Volunteers are needed from Nov. 16 through Dec. 25.
Shifts are two hours starting either at 5:30 or 7:30 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help Thursdays through Saturdays during the event at the ticket booth, the Gingerbread House and Santa’s Ice Castle. Organizations looking for volunteer time as a group can schedule their entire group for one evening or split their volunteers up per available time slots.

Health care & LBGT presentation planned
Youngstown Area Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays will present a talk by Molly Toth of the Universal Health Care Action Network on “The Affordable Care Act and the LBGT Community” at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at St. John’s Episcopal Church Parish House, 323 Wick Ave.
Her talk will be a nonpartisan view of the Affordable Care Act, also called “Obamacare,” what it really does, how it works and who will be impacted with special emphasis on changes affecting the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Community Shield training set Oct. 13
A trooper with the Ohio State Highway Patrol will conduct Community Shield training Oct. 13.
The training, which will be in a one-hour block, consists of instruction in impaired-driver detection, criminal patrol, homeland security and human trafficking, according to a news release.
The training will be at 10 a.m. at the Canfield patrol post on state Route 46, and is for community members to enable them to assist local law enforcement and troopers “as an extra set of eyes and ears.”
