Church will host St. Nicholas event

Published: Thu, November 29, 2012 @ 8:09 a.m.

BOARDMAN

St. James Episcopal Church, 7640 Glenwood Ave., is having its eighth annual St. Nicholas Day Festival at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The free event celebrates the life of Nicholas, bishop of Myra and patron saint of children, and will feature a portrayal of St. Nicholas by Bill Dick of Goshen Township.

An Advent party will follow the service of Evensong, and children will have an opportunity to participate in craft activities and to have photographs taken with St. Nicholas.

In keeping with the Dutch tradition, children leave a shoe or boot filled with carrots for St. Nicholas’ horse by the fireplace and after the liturgy may find the carrots replaced with small gifts from St. Nicholas.
