YSU’s Elkins named All-MVC

Youngstown State junior offensive guard Chris Elkins was named first-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference to lead six YSU players named to the all-league team.

Senior TB Jamaine Cook and senior TE Will Shaw were tabbed second-team all-conference picks while senior DT Aronde Stanton, senior OG Lamar Mady and junior QB Kurt Hess (Dayton, Ohio) were named honorable-mention all-league.

Elkins started all 11 games for the Penguins this season at left guard. Elkins is the first YSU offensive lineman to be named first-team all-league since Brad Samsa in 2008. Elkins was an honorable-mention All-MVFC selection last year. As a unit, the Penguins led the Missouri Valley Football Conference in total offensive yards per game during the regular season averaging 385.6 yards per contest.

Cook, a first-team pick in 2011, was a second-team all-conference selection this season. In league games only he ranked second in average yards per game with 122.2 and was second with 11 rushing touchdowns. His 217 attempts were the most by tailback in league play. He rushed for more than 80 yards in seven of eight MVFC games and eclipsed the 100-yard mark on five occasions in league play.

Shaw was a first-time all-league honoree earning second-team accolades. In his first full season as a tight end, he caught 35 passes for 429 yards and five scores. In league-games only he had 26 catches for 317 yards and two touchdowns.

Hess, a first-team pick in 2011, received honorable-mention accolades for his junior season. In leagues-game only, Hess ranked second in passing efficiency (134.9), second in completion percentage (63.2), tied for second with 11 touchdown passes (11) and was third in passing yards (204.6 per game) among all quarterbacks. All five of his 200-plus yard performances came against MVFC foes.
