Mark Stoops headed to Ky. as head football coach

Published: Tue, November 27, 2012 @ 3:05 p.m.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — The University of Kentucky today hired Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops as football coach.

Stoops, 45, replaces Joker Phillips, who was fired after guiding the Wildcats to three straight losing seasons. Stoops has been the defensive coordinator at Florida State since 2009.

Before his stint with the Seminoles, Stoops was the defensive coordinator at Arizona from 2004-09 under brother Mike Stoops, who was ousted as the Wildcats' head coach during the 2011 season. Their older brother, Bob Stoops, is the head coach at Oklahoma.

The Stoops brothers are Youngstown natives.

The Seminoles are ranked second nationally in total defense this season and allow an average of 249.4 yards per game.

A great Youngstown connection to UK. John Robic, former YSU Men's basketball coach is Calipari's assistant.

So proud of "Meetch" on his appointment as head coach. Good call by UK. Never thought I would say this but, "GO CATS!"
