Jury selection starts

Jury selection began Monday in the trial of Jamelle Jackson, 20, of West Boston Avenue, in the Feb. 6, 2011, mass shooting that left one person dead and 11 others wounded at a house party near Youngstown State University.

In Mahoning County’s first trial relocation in 19 years, Judge John M. Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court moved Jackson’s trial to Summit County Common Pleas Court in Akron due to extensive publicity concerning the case in the Youngstown area.

Jackson is charged with the murder of Jamail Johnson, a 25-year-old YSU senior, and with 11 counts of felonious assault.

Judge Durkin sentenced Columbus Jones Jr., 24, of Cambridge Avenue, to 92 years in prison after he was convicted of the same charges in a jury trial in Mahoning County. Prosecutors allege that Jackson and Jones were the shooters.

Probing library odor

The Poland Library, which closed Nov. 16 because of a strong odor, will remain closed today while officials await test results for what could be causing the smell. “We are taking this a day at a time,” said Janet Loew, library spokeswoman.

The library is working with Columbus-based environmental consultants Lawhon & Associates Inc. to investigate the problem.

Flu vaccines given

Mahoning County District Board of Health offers flu shots and the nasal spray flu vaccine at its office at county health offices at 50 Westchester Drive from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

The cost for the flu shot or the nasal spray flu vaccine is $25 for adults; $14.65 for children. A high-dose flu is available for those 65 and older. No appointment is necessary. Most private insurances can be billed. People on traditional Medicare and Medicaid must bring their cards so the cost of the shot can be billed.
