1861: Judah Benjamin, who had been acting Confederate Secretary of War, is formally named to the post.

1912: Actress and dancer Eleanor Powell is born in Springfield, Mass.

1920: The Irish Republican Army kills 12 British intelligence officers and two auxiliary policemen in the Dublin area; British forces respond by raiding a soccer match, killing 14 civilians.

1922: Rebecca L. Felton of Georgia is sworn in as the first woman to serve in the U.S. Senate.

1972: Amil Dinsio, 38, and Charles Mulligan, 38, both of Youngstown, are sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for the Laguna Niguel, Calif., bank burglary that netted at least $3 million.

Mahoning County commissioners vote to extend the territorial limits of the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority to the entire county, with the exception of Poland Village.

1962: Dr. J. George Harrar, a former Youngstowner who is president of the Rockefeller Foundation, tells 700 people at the Youngstown Area Chamber of Commerce’s 65th annual dinner that private philanthropy is playing a vital role in bringing a better way of life to millions of people throughout the world.

Youngstown Postmaster Chester Bailey says Christmas parcels for residents of distant states should be mailed between Dec. 3 and 8; those for Ohio and nearby states should be mailed no later than Dec.. 12
