A study on the feasibility of moving Cardinal Mooney High School to southern Mahoning County determined that most of those interviewed support the prospect.

“There’s a lot of interest in building a new school” in the county’s southern tier, said the Rev. Gerald DeLucia, Mooney president.

Earlier this year, the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown hired Catholic School Management Inc. of Madison, Conn., to conduct a feasibility study of moving the school versus renovating and updating the existing structure on the city’s South Side.

A group of alumni had approached the Diocese about moving the school to where the county’s population is moving.

Father DeLucia said that of the 60 alumni and parents of current students interviewed, between 70 percent and 80 percent supported the move.

The next phase of the study will determine if the demographic shift and enrollment projections would support the move.

Probably a good idea to move most of the catholic schools out of the city

Football recruiting base must be drying up in Youngstown. I kid on that.

In all seriousness, will a move to the suburbs change the student population at Mooney? Will the majority of Youngstown kids now stay home and go to Ursuline instead of driving possibly 20-25 minutes to the southern part of Boardman or further south (as has been discussed as the location)?

Also, who is funding this new school? I know Mooney has some big donors, but it has to be close to $20 mil for this. And as a member of the diocese, I know we don't have the money to do this.

This move does make sense though for Mooney, based on where their kids come from. Although, I think it makes more sense to combine UHS/CMHS into one and maybe locate on the North End of Boardman or near YSU. But, what do I know. Irish and Cardinal alums can't have that. Football rivalries come first vs operating efficiency of the diocese.
