Charges dropped against man accused of firing at Warren cops

WARREN

The three counts of misdemeanor menacing filed against a 79-year-old Parkman Road man shot by police in July have been dropped because an evaluation said he is not competent to stand trial.

Judge Thomas Gysegem also said during a hearing Friday in Warren Municipal Court that Michael Lardis will not become competent within the 90 days required under Ohio law.

Lardis’ mental limitations are associated with “the aging process,” Judge Gysegem said.

Lardis was shot during a confrontation with Warren police July 1 after police were called to his house in the 400 block of Parkman Road on allegations that Lardis pointed a gun at a neighbor.

After arriving at Lardis’ home, police determined that Lardis was inside. A transcript of radio calls from the incident said Lardis fired about six gunshots at police from an upstairs window, and officers fired back two times.

Samuel Bluedorn, Lardis’ attorney, however, said Friday that the only weapon Lardis had was a BB gun and that police found it inside the house, away from where Lardis was when police shot him.

Lardis has a doctoral degree and did research in biochemistry in Hawaii and New York City, Bluedorn said.

Mary Warren, volunteer coordinator of the Trumbull County Probate Court Senior Court, said family members have cared for Lardis since the incident, and he is “doing real well.”

The old guy brought a BB gun to the fight? Then the big bad cops could not tell the difference between a bang and a puff?
