A drunken brawl between a West Side couple sent a 2-year-old child to Akron Children’s Hospital for stitches to her face and her father to the Mahoning County jail.
Joseph Roberts, 45, of South Osborn Avenue is charged with felonious assault in the Thursday night knife injury to his 2-year-old daughter. He appeared Friday afternoon for arraignment before Magistrate Anthony Sertick of Youngstown Municipal Court.
Roberts, who has retained Atty. Anthony Meranto, was released on a $15,000 bond and ordered to have no contact with his girlfriend or child injured in the altercation.
Roberts’ live-in girlfriend who police said was intoxicated at the time of her interview, and mother of the injured child, told police Roberts had been drinking earlier Thursday and the two of them became engaged in an argument. The couple have three children in common.
The woman said Roberts eventually poured a can of beer all over her, and the argument turned physical. The woman did not provide police with any details about the actual physical fight.
Roberts, according to the woman, brandished a knife during the fight and rushed toward her, but she was able to knock the weapon from his hand. The knife, after being knocked away, hit the couple’s daughter in the mouth causing a severe laceration.
The couple rushed the small child to the Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman where police were called.
The girl received stitches to close the wound. There was no word on her condition Friday night.
Roberts, according to county records, was charged with domestic violence in 2001, but that charge was dismissed for lack of a victim statement. He also was arrested on domestic violence in 2007 and 2008.
Roberts also was charged with consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle in 1998, possession of drugs in 2003 and contempt of court in 2003 and twice in 2004.
