Downtown icon Youngstown Club to close after New Year’s Eve

Downtown icon Youngstown Club to close after New Year’s Eve

Officials at The Youngstown Club, a downtown icon first started by the city’s elite 110 years ago, confirmed on Wednesday that it will close following their annual New Year’s Eve event on Dec. 31.

Katie Dodd, general manager at the club, said business there had been a problem for about 15 years. She cited a lethargic economy as the primary reason for a dwindling membership in recent years.

At its peak in the 1970s and 1980s, the club boasted a membership of 1,100. )n Wednesday that number stood at 250 and Dodd said the only way the club might stay open is if a member steps up with a significant endowment — a situation she said was unlikely.

For more than 100 years the club played host to the city’s industrial barons, lawyers, doctors and other elite factions of the population, who would gather privately there for lunch and dinner, holiday parties and wedding rehearsals, among other things.

Dodd said that all the club’s events scheduled through the end of the year will be honored and take place as planned.

how about another government bailout? Shouldn't be any different ,we are all the same, right? This is just a small non union business, but that shouldn't matter to the socialist Obama.

Two key words in this short article...barons and elite. That's just wrong. Privately, that's not a good word either. We cannot have successful people having places like this that all cannot enjoy. It's just not fair. They did not share with the common folk. It's good this is closing. We must have fairness. We can all enjoy a Big Mac. But I will miss that cheese spread.

A sad event indeed, linked to the demise of the steel industry that provided the wherewithal to give birth to the Youngstown Club.

They could have promoted it more aggressively but it would have lost the charm of its exclusivity.

please keep in mind 20 people will be losing their jobs! some of them have worked there 30 years. what is wrong with having a private club??? why shouldn't those who work hard and are successful have a place of their own away from the common folk. this is america and their is nothing more american then private clubs!!
it is the common folk who will be unemployed because of this. saying your glad it's closing you shoule be ashamed it's hard enough out there

katyshack, where have you been the last four years. Our president has made it clear it is unfair to be successful and have more than others. This club is exactly what he preaches against. So what if you have a better education, busted your butt to get ahead, sacrificed working endless hours to have a few luxuries. It is not fair for you to have that if those who didn't try to get an education, are lazy, and just want to be taken care of, can't enjoy these things too. You must share. All must be fair. And To IM, by the time all the scandals are weeded out, Hillary may not even be able to run in 2016. Marco Rubio will make her look like a really, really old lady by then. Marco Rubio by a landslide.

If Marco Rubio was soooo great why did the Neo-Cons pass him over for the VP nomination? I guess Mitt-Flopper was content with 29% of the Latino vote. The repoobs might try to deport him. According to republicon policy, he will have to carry papers with him wherever he goes to prove he's in the country legally. God forbid if he's ever stopped while jogging and doesn't have papers on his person, the repoobs will then send him back over the fence. True repoobs HATE anyone that looks like him (non-white), remember the "take back our country" bumper stickers? Can you say RACIST?, I knew that you could!! Anyhow, I'm looking forward to the 2nd Inauguration, I think I'll watch it on THE FIXED NOISE NETWORK. Hannity, what a sore frieking LOSER!!! Marco Rubio, WOW!! I can't think of a quicker way for the repoobs to LOSE their base!

Check out the area Country Clubs, you won't notice a shortage of luxury cars in the parking lots.
