Child’s family was checked

CLEVELAND

A couple under investigation in the malnourishing death of their 18-month-old son had been investigated twice on neglect tips while living in the Cleveland area, a county child welfare agency said Tuesday.

The Cuyahoga County Children and Family Services agency received hot-line neglect tips in 2005 and 2007, spokeswoman Mary Louise Madigan said. The first tip was closed after the agency met with the family, and the second led to a court protective order.

The second complaint focused on missed medical appointments and similar issues, but malnourishment wasn’t among them, Madigan said.

The couple, who had four children at the time, moved from Lakewood in 2007, and the oversight was turned over to Erie County officials.

Cuyahoga County officials visited the family’s new home in Erie County before oversight was turned over, Madigan said.
