Motive behind Michigan police HQ shooting unclear

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) — Authorities still are unsure of what prompted a 64-year-old man to open fire at officers inside a suburban Detroit police station.

Southfield Police Chief Eric Hawkins told reporters today there is no apparent motive behind the shooting and that a preliminary investigation reveals the shooter, Harold Joseph Collins, was in poor health.

Hawkins says Collins of Southfield was a military veteran.

Collins was killed during a gun battle with officers Sunday afternoon in the lobby of the department’s headquarters building. One officer was shot in the shoulder during the exchange.

Hawkins says the officer is in stable condition today.

Police say Collins first tried to shoot an officer behind bulletproof glass before he was confronted by other officers.

The Oakland County sheriff’s office is investigating the shooting.
