Men with Detroit connections held in Warren killing

Two men with ties to Detroit were booked into the Trumbull County jail Sunday afternoon in connection with the Sunday morning killing of one man and wounding of another near the downtown area.

Reginald Baldwin, 21, and Dale Hatch, 25, are charged with felonious assault, but additional charges are possible when court reopens Tuesday following Monday’s Veteran’s Day holiday.

Police took both men into custody soon after the 10:30 a.m. shooting on a side street off of Elm Road that killed Marco Dukes, 32, of Warren and wounded Larry A. Smith, 29, of Warren.

Smith remains in a local hospital with at least one gunshot wound to the torso. His condition was not available.

Police took both Detroit men into custody and questioned them Sunday. Witnesses described seeing at least one man fleeing in the direction of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church from the shooting scene.

The church is several hundred yards north of the shooting scene, a parking lot on an alley where possibly 30 or more gunshots were fired. The location is also close to the Cuddle Hugs and Kisses Daycare, 140 Elm Road NE, which was closed at the time of the shooting but which was struck with one bullet.

The parking lot is behind a former doctor’s office with apartments upstairs at 156 Elm Road NE. The doctor’s office and daycare are on an alley named Elm Court, which is between East Market and High streets, three blocks east of Courthouse Square.

Sgt. Jeff Cole of the Warren Police Department said Monday he has no evidence that the shootings started in another location or involved any downtown bars.
