Human remains found along Pa.’s Allegheny Passage

MEYERSDALE, Pa. (AP) — State police are calling in a forensic anthropologist to help gather and study human remains found along the Great Allegheny Passage biking and hiking trail in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Troopers from the Somerset barracks were on the scene for several hours Sunday after someone on the trail reported the suspected remains. State police spokesman Trooper Steve Limani says investigators have confirmed the remains are human, but says a team led by Mercyhurst University’s Dennis Dirkmaat will be there today to gather and study the remains.

It was not immediately clear how long the remains had been there near the Keystone Viaduct near Meyersdale. That’s about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

The forensic anthropology team will attempt to identify the remains and, if possible, determine how the person died.
