This year, Chesapeake Energy created an initiative to hire veterans, resulting in the hiring of 600.
Chesapeake has made hiring veterans a central part of its recruitment strategy, said Martha Burger, Chesapeake senior vice president of human and corporate resources.
“Veterans perform well in our industry and share our company’s commitment to energy independence,” she said. “We hope to honor their talent, experience and military service with rewarding careers, while easing their transition to civilian life.”
The oil and gas industry offers thousands of jobs that are conducive to military experience, said Pete Kenworthy, manager of media relations for Chesapeake in Ohio.
“Military professionals tend to be goal-oriented leaders, skilled at working in teams, disciplined and used to working outside in safety-sensitive environments — characteristics we seek in our employees,” he said.
Performance Technologies, a Chesapeake affiliate, recruited veterans to make up more than 30 percent of new hires in 2012, according to a release from Chesapeake. Veterans also filled 1 in 5 Chesapeake operating jobs for the year.
Mike Hostetler, who works from the company’s Canton office, joined Chesapeake in January 2012 as a field engineer after serving six years of active duty in the Air Force.
“There are plenty of companies that appear to shy away from hiring veterans, claiming that our skill sets aren’t easily translatable,” Hostetler said. “Fortunately, Chesapeake sees service members as we are: unpretentious leaders, attentive professionals and people that get the job done.”
Drug testing and work conditions have led many oil and gas companies to target veterans as employees, said Rhonda Reda, executive director of the Ohio Oil and Gas Education Program.
For Veterans Day, Chesapeake is issuing commemorative challenge coins to each veteran employee.
Chesapeake’s military hiring initiative focuses most of its efforts on job fairs conducted on military bases and offers veterans direct access to recruiters through a veterans-only email address, which is email@example.com.
