Vatican reacts to gay-union initiatives

Published: Sun, November 11, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m.

VATICAN CITY

The Vatican is digging in after gay-marriage initiatives scored big wins this week in the U.S. and Europe, vowing to never stop insisting that marriage can only be between a man and a woman.

In a front-page article in Saturday’s Vatican newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, the Holy See sought to frame itself as the lone voice of courage in opposing initiatives to give same-sex couples legal recognition. In a separate Vatican Radio editorial, the pope’s spokesman asked sarcastically why gay-marriage proponents don’t now push for legal recognition for polygamous couples as well.

Catholic teaching holds that homosexuals should be respected and treated with dignity but that homosexual acts are “intrinsically disordered.” The Vatican also opposes same-sex marriage, insisting on the sanctity of marriage between a man and woman as the foundation for society.

The Vatican’s anti-gay marriage media blitz came after three U.S. states approved same-sex marriage by popular vote in the election that returned Barack Obama to the U.S. presidency, Spain upheld its gay-marriage law, and France pushed ahead with legislation that could see gay marriage legalized early next year.

“One might say the church, at least on this front, has been defeated,” L’Osservatore Romano wrote. “But that’s not the case.”

That's great news. Keep trying to stem the rising tide Catholic Church. I will laugh as your conservative, hate filled dogma dies with you and your pedophile priests

LtMac,

The Catholic Church will never die. Speaking of hate filled..., you seem pretty hate filled to me.

Expecting the Catholic Church to change its stand on same-sex marriage is like expecting it to eliminate one of the Ten Commandments.

Wait 'till someone wants to marry his dog. No rules!... no problem!

The Catholic Church's view on marraige has never wavered, the sanctity of marriage between a man and woman as the foundation for society and the sanctity between priests and alter boys as the foundation for their church.

Had the Church taken as deliberate a stance against pedophilia as it does against gay marriage and abortion, then maybe their view would carry some credibility.

The Pope, once viewed by many as a symbol for peace, love and tolerance, has become viewed by many as a pedophile who didn't get caught. We now look at him as a symbol for sexism, pedophilia, manipulation, bribery and blackmail. If any of you think that is harsh, I say talk to one of their sex abuse victims, then get back to me.

IslandMike,

Catholic-haters usually come in two varieties;

(1) Former Catholics, or

(2) Atheists

Which are you?

None of you business.

IslandMike,

At least you admit that you hate the Catholic Church. What are you, ashamed of what you are?

You Catholic-haters are no better than racists. Maybe worse.

No, I just don't like pedophiles. They are worse than racist and the Catholic Church protected them.

IslandMike,

"Had the Church taken as deliberate a stance against pedophilia as it does against gay marriage and abortion, then maybe their view would carry some credibility."

Bingo! The Church has always condemned pedophilia. Individual sins of certain Catholics (including priests) don't invalidate the Church's condemnation of all sin.

Your hatred for the Church is getting in the way of you responding sensibly on this series of posts.

Paul,

The Church's stance on pedophilia was to play the shell game with priests whenever an allegation of pedophilia was made. Their track record proves it and you're trying to rationalize what happened. The Catholic Church did EVERYTHING they could to protect themselves from lawsuits and that BACKFIRED. The Church stands for sexism, pedophilia, manipulation, bribery and blackmail. I know that might hit close to your heart, but sometimes the TRUTH hurts. The Catholic Curch is a DISGRACE.

IslandMike,

First of all, I simply don't agree with you - and I guess we can agree to disagree.

Second, you are a bigot. - defined by Merriam-Webster as "a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially: one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance".

Third, I am personally offended by your remarks regarding the Catholic Church - as I love it and it is not only my Church, it is THE CHURCH.

By previous posts, it appears you are an atheist or a former Catholic. I pray that you have a change of heart.

Paul,

Pray in one hand and crap in the other, let me know which one gets full first.

I am grateful that we have the Catholic Church, without them, we wouldn't have such great stories of Jesus turning water into wine, Jesus walking on water and Mary giving birth even though she was a 'virgin.' We also wouldn't have the now infamous quote, "where on the doll did he touch you."

As far as you saying it is "the" church, it just shows your ignorance and arrogance. Love it all you want, it'll NEVER change the FACT that it has been a haven for pedophiles.

Amazing how an article like this brings out the atheists, Catholic-hating bigots, and every other kind of malcontent around.

Notice how bitter and negative atheists are? What a great way to view life.

Paul Parks is the epitome of hypocrasy and really helps me laugh when i read his comments. Too bad it stains the occasional good comments he can make. I am however glad he came out as a self described bigot, so we know what he truly is. His Merriam-Webster dictionary, clearly describes his bigoted behavior towards the gays and those who feel they have their own right to abortion. Unfortunately he wraps himself so tightly in his religion, it covers his eyes to the truth, that he is indeed as much of a bigot as he espouses others are.

I am also personally offended by your remarks regarding gays and women who choose what to do with their own bodies, as i Love them as Jesus loves them and know that HIS word is the only word. Go justify your hate and bigotry somewhere else, we are on to you.

ytown,

I am just a poor sinner, like the rest of us. As far as being a bigot, I don't feel hatred or intolerance towards anyone (love the sinner but hate the sin - just as Jesus does.)

This also addresses your "hypocrisy" charge.

I just get sick and tired of anti-Catholic rhetoric posing as "objective truths," when all they are - are someone's parroted opinions.

Bigotry against the Catholic Church is the most commonly accepted form of bigotry in today's society.

paulparks....I believe you may be confused when it comes to opposing views of the catholic church.

I attended catholic schools for twelve years but I've been cured. My problem isn't with you or any member of the catholic church or any other religion. I'm going to assume that you're a good person and would never hurt a child or protect anyone that would. I believe you deserve better than what the clergy right up to the pope have given back for your support.

You should read up on the Spanish Inquisition, the church's relationship with hitler. The centuries of enabling and covering up for pedophiles is UNDENIABLE for anyone that is paying attention.

joe paterno was exposed for the self serving scumbag he was for looking the other way so he could protect his linebacker coach because that was his priority. The church leaders did much worse. They were instrumental in the deaths of thousands during the inquisition and providing protection for pedophiles for centuries.

I'm not an atheist but I've come to the conclusion that all religions are cults. Look around the world and see the thousands killed every day based on different relgious beliefs. Now name one war that was based on the beliefs of atheist or even one person killed based on those who have those beliefs.

If a person believes in God and wants a relationship with God....the catholic church would be the last place I would look.

Hitler, Mao, & Stalin come to mind. Although Hitler may have been born a Catholic many consider he was anything but. These are evil men. How could they be anything but atheists?
