Teams from Struthers, Ursuline and LaBrae will be part of the inaugural Hope Classic High School Basketball Showcase, set for Dec. 8 at the Struthers Fieldhouse.
The event is sponsored by the Hope Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, a volunteer organization with a focus on helping chronically and terminally ill children.
The five-game schedule featuring two girls and three boys matchups will begin at 2 p.m.
The opening game features girls teams from Rocker River Magnificat and Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin. NDCL’s boys team will face Struthers at 3:45 p.m. The Struthers girls will play Canton Central Catholic at 5:30 p.m.
The evening will feature a 7 p.m. matchup between boys teams from Ursuline and LaBrae and an 8:30 p.m. game between boys teams from Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary and Holland (Ill.) Seton Academy.
All game times are tentative and subject to change.
Former Cleveland Browns safety Felix Wright is the honorary chairman of the inaugural Hope Classic. Wright played for the Browns from 1985-90 and spent the 1991 and ’92 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.
“I am honored to be asked to serve as the first honorary chair of the Hope Classic,” Wright said. “I am here to help a great organization like the Hope Foundation and this worthwhile cause.”
