VETERANS

World War II pilot honored in Warren

CHAMPION

Steven L. Pesko, an Army Air Force B-25 bomber pilot in the Pacific Theater during World War II, was recently named 2012 Veteran of the Year by the Polish Legion of American Veterans Lt. Col. Matt Urban Post 164 in Warren. He extended his tour of duty for three years after the war and was discharged Oct. 11, 1948.

Pesko, of Champion, was born in 1924, the son of Michael and Julia Jonas Pesko, and graduated from Newton Falls High School in 1941. He worked for Republic Steel Corp. for 32 years and also owned and operated Pesko Excavating and Trucking Co.

He and his wife, the former Pauline D. Mosier, whom he married in April 1951, have a son, Douglas, and two grandchildren, Laura and Audra.

He is a member of the Air Craft Owner and Pilot Association, the Experimental Air Craft Association, and the Executive Pilot Association. He piloted twin-engine passenger planes as a partner and board member of Warren Aviation and Charter Services.

Pesko joined PLAV Post 164 in 1999. He has served as commander for five years and is a trustee. He became a National Life Member of the PLAV in 2010. He also is a member of American Legion Post 298 in Warren and has volunteered more than 100 hours at the Veterans Affairs Clinic in Warren.

DEPLOYED

Two back in the U.S.

Army National Guard 1st Lt. Aaron M. McMahon and Spec. Zachary C. Freeland, members of the 148th Transportation Co. in North Canton, have returned to the United States after being deployed overseas at a forward operating base to serve in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

McMahon, a platoon leader, has served in the military for five years. A son of Michael T. McMahon of Salem and Sandy L. Irwin of Beloit, he graduated in 1999 from West Branch High School, Beloit, and received a bachelor’s degree in 2010 from Kent State University.

Freeland, a motor-vehicle operator, has served in the military for two years. He is the son of Todd Freeland of Lisbon and Michelle Thomas of Salem, and is a 2007 graduate of David Anderson High School, Lisbon.

Off to Afghanistan

About 160 soldiers from the Ohio Army National Guard’s 1487th Transportation Co., Piqua, are deploying in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The public is invited to the soldiers’ call to duty ceremony at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Piqua High School.

The unit will support operations in Afghanistan by providing tactical ground transportation security. The soldiers will train at Fort Hood, Texas, before deploying to their designated assignment in Afghanistan.

Major deployed to OEF

Air Force Maj. David C. Thompson has deployed overseas to a forward operating base to serve in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Thompson is a flight commander assigned to the 651st Contingency Aeromedical Staging Facility, Defense Health Information Management Systems at Falls Church, Va. The major has served in the military for 22 years. He is the son of David C. Thompson Sr. of Greenville, Pa., and a 1986 graduate of Kennedy Catholic High School, Hermitage, Pa. He received a bachelor’s degree in 1994 from Slippery Rock University, Pa.

Army: Pvt. Trelan C. Barron (Chaney High School, ’11), son of Angie Hakeem of Youngstown; Pvt. Vanessa L. Knight (Chaney High School, ’09), daughter of Michael Knight of Youngstown, and niece of Lottie Supples of New Castle, Pa.
